National Trust Wallington, Cragside and Hadrian's Wall Challenging Route
This challenging ride starts from the Wallington carpark and heads out past the estate village of Cambo. Climb steadily past Harwood Forest until you reach the old gibbet, marking the western boundary of the Wallington estate. From here its a rapid decent into Elsdon. Follow the scenic road through the Northumberland National Park and upper Coquetdale until you get to Rothbury where it's only a short detour to National Trust Cragside (toilets, refreshments). A challenging climb out of Rothbury is rewarded by great views of Simonside. Smaller roads are taken to Netherwitton, Longhorseley and Bolam lake before crossing the A696 at Belsay (take care). Heading through southern Northumberland towards Hadrian's Wall, the route passes by the National Trust's new visitor centre at Housesteads (toilets, refreshments). Decending off the military road, take the turning north towards Bellingham. Climbing out of Bellingham across rural land, take care when crossing the A68 and A696 before cruising downhill back to Wallington.
