Boston to New York Border - Ride
Boston to New York Border - Ride Ride was completed in 3 and a quarter riding days, averaging about 60 miles/day. The first days' ride (78 mi) proved possible, but challenging with a full camping load. Recommend stopping earlier. Subsequent days were re-routed southward through Middletown and New Haven, as compared with the original route to and through the Kettletown State Forest. Minor route-finding was necessary in and around Ashford, NY (the roads became farm tracks) and New Haven (several blocked roads, etc). On the upper end, routes from Boston were open and simple. However, the cross-border rail trail is NOT paved. Large sections are rideable with good road tires (32s), but other sections are deep sand and necessitated walking and pushing. Sections afterward were steeply hilly. On the lower end, US 1 was said to be considerably less congested and rideable after the 162 junction. Riding 66 => 17 => Hartford TPK => 162 => US 1 proved relatively low-traffic. Several bike shops are passed, or nearby, on the path. - a 203.3 mi cycling route in Cambridge, Massachusetts
