You can start from any point in the city and make your way up to Route 9. Cyclists do sometimes ride Rt. 9 although it is marked as "no bicycles". There's a bike path and a side road that will get you out of the city. Mostly climbing (2% grade) on the way out. Mostly decending on the way back (an out-and-back ride).
