National Trust Castle to Castle Bamburgh to Lindisfarne medium route
This 38 mile (19 miles one way) out and back route takes in two of Northumberland's famous castles and the unique causeway over to Lindisfarne (Holy Island). It mainly follows the Sustrans Coast and Castles route (NCN1) so is well sign-posted. Start in the village of Bamburgh (parking, refreshments, toilets, castle) and head inland. At just over 6 miles the route crosses the A1 (extra care required). It crosses again just after 13 miles but this time the route crosses a bridge before heading back towards the coast. You cycle across the famous causeway over to Lindisfarne (Holy Island). Be sure to check the tide timetable before you plan your trip as the causeway gets totally covered by the sea at least once a day. As you cross the causeway you'll see the dramatic view of Lindisfarne Castle (NT) in the distance. Continue onto the island (refreshments, toilets, Castle, Priory) and explore. Why not treat yourself to a cup of tea and a well-earned rest before re-tracing your outbound route back to Bamburgh?
