MRVR - 70 - App/Middlebury Gaps
Another popular MRVR route, departing from Sugarbush Base Lodge, you will have a fast descent all the way to Rt 17 where you will take a left and immediately begin a gradual climb that will become increasingly more difficult as you near the top of Appalachian Gap. The a long very twisty descent with some tight corners followed by gentle downgrade to the junction with Rt 116 where you will take a left toward Bristol. Following these largely flat to gentle rolling roads to East Middlebury, you will take a left onto RT 125 and begin the climb up Middlebury Gap. If the Middlebury Gap climb appears to go on forever, it does. For 11 miles the road heads skyward. Mostly at a gradual pitch, but in some areas, the road tilts upward to a 13% grade. Once at the top, you will be treated by a very long descent into the town of Hancock. Careful on the decent as the pavement is not of the best quality and last summer (2008) there were significant washouts due to flooding. Once in Hancock, stop at the country store on the right to refuel and then take a left onto Rt 100 which will wind north along gently rolling hills, marshes, waterfalls, and the occasional moose. Just after you pass the hamlet of Warren on your right, you will take a left turn onto the Sugarbush Access Road. Or, as I have called it, the 5 pitches. This last part of the ride might be the hardest as your legs are tired and you thought you left the steep stuff behind you. The finish back at the base lodge should leave you wilted. - a 69.5 mi cycling route in Mad River Valley, Vermont
